Are Cigarettes Better?

Is it better to smoke a pack of cigarettes in front of them daily?

School teachers see the psychological damage of smartphones in youth. Just this week, a teacher across the hall called smartphones demonic. How can a teacher get to this point and treat America’s pastime with so little respect? Maybe it’s the facial expressions of students changing when they lose possession of the device during a testing period. Maybe it’s the anger displayed when the machine is taken for a short time. Maybe it’s the ugly hate and bullying generated from this genie in a bottle.

Accordingly, I recently asked myself and pondered, “Would it be better for parents to smoke cigarettes in front of their children vs. modeling smartphone adoration in front of their impressionable offspring?” Of course this question is a form of hyperbole, but is it worth asking? Smoking is not healthy, and we must take care of the temple God has entrusted us to protect. However, lungs can heal if smoking ceases, and cancer does not destroy the immortal soul…yet the smartphone, with its technological wonders, can transform the mind physically and chemically. With enough engagement, it can corrupt the immortal soul.

Smartphone usage has been linked to depression among people of all ages. Beyond the disease of depression, men and more recently women are becoming obsessed with all desires of sexual lust accessed through the charming little device. A majority of men view porn and perhaps half of clergy view porn on a regular basis on their little handheld gateways. So, the adults in the room who cannot handle all access give their children the little wonder as a GRAND entitlement. Is anyone going to say no? That would be radical, stupid beyond words. Go live with the Amish…the world lives in a smartphone.

Some protect children by keeping them out of public schools yet insist that smartphones babysit and keep them out of the way. Images that will never leave the mind may encourage them to try alternative lifestyles. Be sure to take a walk down to the red-light district without leaving the comforts of home…or have a chat with an unknown down the street. The little gadget that is carried around and cherished with eyes is quite powerful. It has the power to transform the world for its slaves. The little false god gives all desires…nothing has to be left to the imagination.

Teens are obsessed with social acceptance in unhealthy ways while adults model the need for validation from peers online. Children learn that the most important purpose in life is displaying superficial happiness and receiving likes by people they will never talk to in God's "real life created reality.“ They must have instant gratification. Everyone must see their image online…it is dire, and it is a MUST. Children feel the pressure of possessing material as parents post trophies and glorious vacation shots for all to see. The little genie called the smartphone tells its servant that he is instantly cherished…the public adores. Just check in with local fame on every hour.

While zombies consume the world through little screens, the planet is changing rapidly. Followers of the handheld god don’t have time to address issues of immorality or follow the Lord’s call…for He is observed and contemplated much less than the little techno wonder. SLOTH is king, and Jesus is denied. We don’t have time to stand up to abortion, child abuse, or other ills. We don’t have time to serve others. Like a trophy to be shared, service comes only via a text, a picture, or a rare ring. If it cannot be advertised, it is not worthy.

The world commands the notion that no one can live or cope without the little device carried in the hands or pocket. Social life cannot be had without it, happiness will not be experienced for those who cannot afford it, the pride of life cannot be exhibited without it….without this idol there will be no thriving. The world commands sellouts to the smartphone…give it your time, affection, attention…withdrawal from human conversations in the presence of flesh. Just as ancient generations saw the “naturalness” of living with Baal and Asherah, so do modern men see the ease of carrying and obsessing over the god that brings virtual friends, vanity, and impulsiveness. The virtual church is certainly on the horizon. Human presence is not needed within the little false god’s sophistication.

If the smartphone could be cast In J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic literary series The Lord of the Rings, it would be the “ring”….my precious. It can change moods, alter feelings...it must be possessed…my precious. Leave it at home when going to visit a friend’s house and panic is enabled. Imagine life without it for a week and distress comes calling…can’t live without it. If only we could install it under the skin or into the mind…only then we would never lose it or forget it…only then we could be plugged in…not missing a beat….only if…only then…maybe that is the next step in glorious man-made evolution. Satan’s best gift yet…it exceeds present non-binary fashion…it has to be the next best thing. Forget gender neutrality…let’s merge with the technology worshipped in our hands. I wonder, will the highway to hell be paved with smartphones?

Perhaps smoking a pack of cigarettes in front of them is better.
