When I need to contemplate our Lord’s glory and power, I frequently turn to Psalm 24. Its poetic rhythm paints a picture of breathtaking worship as it identifies the Creator’s ownership of everything. It is believed by many biblical scholars that the psalm was used for the entrance ceremony celebrating the Ark of the Covenant’s arrival in Jerusalem. I can picture the ark glistening in the sun as the priests carried it to the city gates.
The psalm's questions were likely asked by priests with its responses given in chorus by worshippers. For the modern reader, verses 3 through 4 can be applied to the ascension of Christ. The psalm ultimately transitions (24:7) to personify Jerusalem’s gates as needing to stretch to make way for the King. These inspired words from God to David are incredible.
In worship, in personal struggles, and in contemplation of our Savior, Psalm 24 is a powerful acknowledgement of God’s omnipotence. His Word is awe-inspiring...
Who is the King of Glory?
The Lord Strong and Mighty,
The Lord Mighty in Battle.
Psalm 24
A Psalm of David
1 The earth is the Lord’s, and all it contains,
The world, and those who dwell in it.
2 For He has founded it upon the seas
And established it upon the rivers.
3 Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord?
And who may stand in His holy place?
4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
Who has not lifted up his soul to falsehood
And has not sworn deceitfully.
5 He shall receive a blessing from the Lord
And righteousness from the God of his salvation.
6 This is the generation of those who seek Him,
Who seek Your face—even Jacob. Selah.
7 Lift up your heads, O gates,
And be lifted up, O ancient doors,
That the King of glory may come in!
8 Who is the King of glory?
The Lord strong and mighty,
The Lord mighty in battle.
9 Lift up your heads, O gates,
And lift them up, O ancient doors,
That the King of glory may come in!
10 Who is this King of glory?
The Lord of hosts,
He is the King of glory. Selah.
